Twenty-one is one of those funny ages. Not funny haha...but funny odd. People fill the number up with lots of expectations. I suppose I'm guilty as charged. Twenty-one is supposed to symbolize true adulthood. I thought that by 21 I would have all of my little duckies in a row and know exactly where I was headed in life. My ducks are still working on getting their acts together. Sometimes I wish my ducks would just hurry up. I thought that all the awkwardness of the gangly teenage years would have completely worn away. Let. Me. Tell. You. Awkwardness does not go away. Case in point this morning. I strutted up to D-boy with my very grown up high heels and pencil skirt with a bright pink silky top. I was feeling very 21. I can say that with experience now. Anyway, whatdaya think the first thing he noticed was? That would be the fact that my brand spankin' new hot coral lipstick smells like old woman lipstick. Yup. Slap a big gawky on me and call me Sally. Most people think you should celebrate with a big drink fest. I don't drink. I thought that I would have a closet full of high heels that I could prance around in with the best of 'em. I usually look more like a cross between Olive Oil {Popeye} and Miss Congeniality. Good thing pictures don't walk. I thought I would be able to pull together and pull off any look with comfort and ease. Most mornings you can find me standing waist deep in a pile of rejected outfits wondering why everything I want to wear is dirty. Of course. {Answer would be that I need to wash clothes more than once every three weeks. I'm still coming to terms with that sad fact.}

I've said all of this to say that I resolve not to place such high expectations on myself. Not to worry so much about all the menial details because things will be no matter what. I resolve to live more in the moment, whether it means being more spontaneous, or more thankful, or simply more present in the every day of the every day. Here's to 21 being the best year yet!

Love,

Ramsey

P.S. I got t-o-tally spoiled! Dusty got me a fantastic tripod. I could use the thing standing on stilts if I wanted to. That is an important criterion for a tripod, you know? And it has a very professional-looking black bag. Always a plus in my book. Sissy Had got me the darling shirt. And a new tag for the front of my car. With my initials. Because she may or may not have run into my old one. Not. Because I would DEFInitely not ride around with a dented tag on my car for the past few months. And my sweet Mommy and Daddy got me. Pause for it. A Movado watch. I know, read it again. I am an official adult now. And it is officially beautiful. And I am officially in love with it. And in love with the word official. Apparently. And I got my cupcakes {and and aaahhmazing cake} from the Cake Shop in Tallahassee. They were just as fabulous as they look in the pictures I assure you. Ok. Done bragging now. Love these people!

(insert chorus) HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!!!!

being 21 myself (turning 22 on september), I must day awkwardness doesn't go away with age, we just become more confident as being awkward

Happy Birthday!!!!
I spent my 21st birthday on crutches at--get this-- the ballpark. My husband (boyfriend at the time) had purchased the tickets BEFORE I badly injured my knee.
Yes, I crutched up 50+ cement steps. I don't drink either, but that would have been a TERRIBLE sight!
Just wait until you turn 22 . . . then things start to get really crazy!!

Happy Birthday!! I'm working on lowering my expectations for myself too, because you just gotta realize no one is perfect and everyone's just trying to do their best.

Happy Birthday! I had lots of expectations at 21. And then at 25. 30 was my best year to date :) But it looks like you had a blast and I am very jealous of your Movado, fancy pants!

Happy belated birthday. I definitely didn't feel like an adult at 21. Shoot, I am 26 and still don't feel like an adult.

Happy, happy birthday lady! The pictures are great, it looks like you had a wonderful time with people who are very important to you!

If it makes you feel any better, I'm 31 and still not sure where my life is going. Things took a weird turn last year and my plans got all skewed so now I'm starting over. Living in the moment instead of worrying about where we *should* be going is a great idea!

I seriously want to be you. Or your best friend. Creepy? ehhh probably. Anyway...I think it's really awesome that you don't drink. I don't either...definitely not the norm for girls in their early twenties, huh?

Happy Birthday!!! It looks like you had an amazing one! Don't worry I still feel awkward and 17 inside. I forget that I am 23 and supposed to be an adult now.

I'm so glad that you aren't a total drinky-face! And kudos to you for putting that out there on your blog. I spent my 21st birthday in Canada (ironic because that's where all Michiganders go on their 18th birthday since that's the drinking age in Canada) seeing a Hamlet play with my boyfriend. It was amazing. AND the border patrol said, "you are spending the wrong birthday here" .. NOT EVERYONE DRINKS PEOPLE! Haha

Happy Birthday! :)

you're adorable ramsey! happy 21st. :)

and I have to say, kudos on the nondrinking thing. i think it is a little unfortunate that people seem to think that is all there is to do on a 21st birthday. I'm 21 in February and i side with you on this one!
